If you are like me, once in a while you get discouraged that nobody is listening to what you are saying about the Lord. It makes perfect sense to you because He is Perfect, and you know that deep within your heart. That is, you know it now because the Holy Spirit has drawn you to Jesus; you are indwelt and have had your eyes and ears opened, you have had your heart opened. You are no longer blinded by the god of this world, who seeks to rule through the darkness in the minds of men. You have seen the Light of Christ and it fills your life with a brightness beyond the noon sun. You want others to have the same feeling, to experience the same joy. And some days it seems that no one hears you.
Take heart and keep talking, for nothing you do is going to move someone closer to Christ. Nothing that is, unless the Holy Spirit draws them in and convicts them. So where is the encouragement in that? It is in the fact that you are not responsible for conversion, you are responsible for contact. You do not bring people to Christ; you bring Christ to people. The Holy Spirit has always, and always will, do the heavy lifting.
An example I would use are the Apostles. Look at Luke 18:31-34
Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be accomplished. For He will be delivered to the Gentiles and will be mocked and insulted and spit upon. They will scourge Him and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again.” But they understood none of these things; this saying was hidden from them, and they did not know the things which were spoken.
They did not understand even when plainly taught by Jesus, because they could not comprehend the enormity of what was going to happen in Jerusalem. After 3 years at His side, listening to His teaching, they could not grasp what the Son of Man was about to go through on their behalf, on our behalf. Now look at the words of Jesus during the Upper Room Discourse (John 13-17) as He spoke to these same apostles in John 14:26:
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
The power of their memory, the power of their preaching and teaching, came from the Holy Spirit. You see it running through the book of Acts, through the Epistles of Paul, Peter and John. It is the power of the Holy Spirit, not that of man, not even an apostle, which drove the Word to reach into the world.
And this is our comfort and our strength. We speak of Christ, and Him crucified to an unbelieving world that so desperately needs to hear of Him, and what He did on the Cross. God only gives us what we can handle, the easy part. He does all the hard work. Always did and always will.
So go forth and keep talking, the Holy Spirit will do the rest.
Do it today, because…Jesus is coming soon!
